My goal was to write in French, but I honestly hated this language. So I would write a mixture of languages, but mostly in English.
Anyone have Paris resturaunt/hotel/attraction recommendations? My wife and I are going on our honeymoon soon we don't like crowds, I don't drink, and she is vegetarian
@AnarchoCatgirlism rue Saint Anne near the Pyramides (lines 7 and 14) station is full of japanese restaurants and shops.
There's a really nice park along the avenue Daumesnil (recommending getting off at Montgallet station on line 8) that takes you a good hour or two.
The Marais quarter (Saint Paul station, line 1) was the gay quarter, now way less, but there are still a couple of gay things.
Shodai is a nice tea salon with lots of deserts, and they have a couple locations across Paris
@AnarchoCatgirlism the métro stations are well labeled, you can't get lost inside of them. If your phone has NFC, download the Bonjour RATP app, on which you can buy tickets and use your phone as a pass, otherwise you have to pay for a Navigo Easy, which is just the support, on which you buy the tickets.
Métro, (bus and tram), RER tickets are NOT the same.
RER is lightish rail, and tickets are from a given station to another. Be careful, even if Orly is on line 14, you need a special ticket
@AnarchoCatgirlism for the hotels, sticking to the good old chains (Ibis) is a very safe bet, you can get away for 80€ a night for a basic room inside of Paris.
If your breakfast is usually sweet, go get some pastries in a boulangerie, it'll be better than the hotel's.
For attractions, really depends on what you like, but the Eiffel tower is overrated (and crowded). Do go to the Jardin des Plantes though, near Gare d'Austerlitz (lines 5 and 10), it's lovely (and has a natural sciences museum)
@AnarchoCatgirlism finally, even though there are a lot of public transportation in Paris, walking from place to place is really nice!
And for paying, visa and mastercard are accepted pretty much everywhere, without a minimum amount, and there's no tipping or additionnal taxes: you pay what's displayed
(except for hotels and such where there's a taxe de séjour, which you pay when you arrive, which is about 1€/night/person)
Tonight's Low Quality Ad is for the Naughty Cat Wand. Look closely at that cat's face. That is the look of a cat that feels no remorse for his crimes and will immediately go back to raising Hell.

I like how this looks like a weapon the devil would use to try and fail to torment a cat.
My promise is to talk to you about a Japanese music album every week for #JMusicFriday

Please use the #JMusicFriday hashtag and write about your favorite album or song!!
They are very shallow dogs.
acab includes media upload validation
@soop acab includes all anti-features
@Li like
ive just reencoded the entirety of kpop demon hunters into a 22mb webm file
what do you mean i can't upload it because validation failed. what is wrong with it. it plays perfectly fine in my browser
@soop is this so you cant just rename a giant file to webm and take up space on the server storing random shit? because theres ways of encoding arbitary data in valid video formats
@Li no it's just a normal webm file there's geniunely nothing weird about it
@soop maybe it only likes mp4??
@Li it's supposed to support webm (even though it'll convert to mp4 after recieving the file, because mastodon is stuck in 2001)
@soop maybe a codec it doesnt know idk sounds just like a parse error or something
@Li it's just normal av1, perfectly normal for webm
@soop my old laptop can't play av1, its really crappy for older hardware, better to use h264
a reminder that the language you use matters and "sideloading" is a term made up by the enemy
it's called installing software
@soop
90s Install the Computer Program
00s Install the Application
10s Install the App
20s Get the App
"They simplified the terms to accommodate their corporate ideals"
"They made up words to separate their "good" from our "bad""
- "Advanced development features" such as "sideloading" unverified external software.
1. It's not an "Advanced feature", we have been able to install software on devices since the beginning of the computers. We are doing it every day.
2. Sideloading: There is no "side", you make it sound like there is a side of "good" and "bad" apps. Also it's not "loading" we are installing them just like any other app.
3. "Unverified": Who cares whatever you "verify" or not. Software is software. When you try to run uncertified software on Windows or Mac it runs without a problem. Why should this be any different?
4. "External": External to what? To you? To the phone? You are not my phone, you are not my friend, you are a multimillion dollar company. You don't get to decide what I put on my phone.
@soop @meluzzy @tauon on windows the answer is the CA store, which you can actually add your own stuff into or remove anything, its convoluted but possible, these days; that option is seemingly missing and im expected to trust whatever appointed ""authority figure"" they give me, on what softeare i can run in general,
authorities not be abusive challenge ! (impossible)
@soop @Li @meluzzy @tauon bonus points if said corpo is subject to laws that mandate them to integrate #Govware #Backdoors and hand over data...
See #CloudAct: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CLOUD_Act
This is why #IRC & #XMPP outlived #ICQ & #Skype and why #Mumble & #JitsiMeet will outlive #discord & #GoogleMeet!
@kkarhan@infosec.space @Li@tech.lgbt @soop@wetdry.world @meluzzy@woof.tech i mean i agree but why do you use so many hashtags 😭🙏
@tauon @soop @meluzzy malware being allowed through when the right person makes it and calls it the right thing is a frature not a bug, your dealing with authority figures their whole thing is to be abusive and horrible but then its fine because their the ones doing it, the big approved google spyware that steals your information to show you ads is shown as trusted with the big checkmark, but the not googleade spyware that steals your information to sell you ads is big evil malware,
this is a feature not a bug of authoritarian figures, the same thing can be somehow okay or not okay depending on who does it, and not on its impact or what it does to the person it is being done too,
@cobra@ak.vern.cc @Li@tech.lgbt @soop@wetdry.world @meluzzy@woof.tech i mean hes not wrong hes just saying it in a weird way
@Li Officially adding the "posting with too many hashtags" to the "very uncool" list of things you can do on the internet.
At least half of the time, none of the reasons is discoverability, but rather content warning.
No, no, hear me out.
I'm not on Mastodon. This may come as a surprise if you think the Fediverse equals Mastodon, but I'm not on Mastodon. I'm not on a Mastodon fork either. I'm on something that's called Hubzilla (https://en.wikipedia.org/Hubzilla, https://hubzilla.org, https://joinfediverse.wiki/Hubzilla, feature comparison tables with Mastodon: https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/item/0a75de76-eb27-4149-b708-f20b2f79d392). Hubzilla is not only not Mastodon, it's very, very, very much not Mastodon.
Hubzilla handles content warning differently from Mastodon. Mastodon does content warnings poster-side in a separate content warning field that's actually the summary field from StatusNet, repurposed as a content warning field by Mastodon in 2017.
Hubzilla does content warnings reader-side with a feature simply called "NSFW". Optionally. Individually for each reader. And fully automatically by means of a simple list of keywords that anyone can edit for themselves. By default, the list contains "nsfw" and "contentwarning". So if a post, a comment or a DM contains "nsfw" and/or "contentwarning", it is automatically hidden behind a content warning button.
In other words: If you don't want to see something immediately, activate the "NSFW" feature and add the keyword(s) of that uncomfortable thing to the NSFW keyword list. And Hubzilla will hide it for you, and only for you and not for everyone out there. (By the way: Mastodon itself has had this feature in its own filters since October, 2022. But nobody knows because Twitter has never had it, and Mastodon's entire culture is built on Mastodon 3.x as per spring 2022.)
However, in order for this to work, posts and comments have to include respective keywords. So I include them as hashtags because shoehorning keywords into the post text isn't always possible, and listing them at the bottom of the post as only keywords looks dumb.
A side-effect is that you can also use these keywords/hashtags to actually filter posts and comments out entirely.
And again, I post a whole lot of stuff that may make people feel uncomfortable. Hence, I have to hashtag it all.
Here are some examples for how I use hashtags:
CC: @Li ~ Crystal System
@jupiter_rowland having to read through the post to see the content warnings defeats the point. this comes out kinda crappy in mastodon, (also alot of us dont use mastodon either but rather sharkey or akkoma)
but -- in general it being something the reader has to explicitly block or disallow makes it completley suck as a content warning; usually wether i click through a content warning it depends on how im actively feeling in the moment, if i am up for this currenrly; and having to also compile a big list of my triggers is not trivial, but also raises serious safety and privacy concerns if the instance owner is (theretically) able to see all that information; if its stored on account settings, amoung many other things, it would mean constantly going back and forth with settings and stuff too ..
it seems kinda clear to me this wasnt made by anyone who actually has like ptsd/did/etc ... who relies on content warnings as accessibility not just casually. tbh..
In practice, however, not everything gets such a content warning. Especially when it comes from Friendica, Hubzilla, (streams), Forte or any long-form blogging server app in the Fediverse whose users often neither know that Mastodon has this content warning culture nor which of their various text fields corresponds to Mastodon's content warning field. Being able to automatically hide posts by keywords can actually be safer.
Also, it isn't only you who gets the content warnings that you want. It's well over 10,000,000 Fediverse users who get that content warning forced upon them and shoved down their throats, whether they need it or not.
Or would you like to get content warnings like "CW: long post (almost 5,000 characters), Fediverse meta, Fediverse-beyond-Mastodon meta, content warning meta, hashtag meta" all the time if you don't need to be warned about any of this?
So, let's suppose you don't want to see me talk about alt-text, maybe not right away. Well, others may want to see me talk about alt-text, and they want to see it with no CW in the way. So they don't want me to shove a "CW: alt text meta" into their faces, and they don't want to click it to read my posts and comments about alt-text.
And so:
#AltTextMeta
and #CWAltTextMeta
as keywords. (Nobody please copy-paste these! I've had to add zero-width word joiners to make them appear like they do because Hubzilla parses what looks like hashtags even in in-line code.)#AltTextMeta #CWAltTextMeta
to it. I always do, trust me.But everyone's needs in terms of content warnings are different. Not everyone needs the same content warnings.
If everyone in the Fediverse was to cater to everyone's needs in terms of content warnings all the same, there would hardly be a single post left without a content warning. I have compiled a list of over 100 content warnings which I could easily expand to several thousand because every nation and every state out there must have its own politics content warning.
The list includes cars. People in the rural USA don't understand why because a personal automobile is absolutely necessary to survive in the first place. For people in big European cities, on the other hand, the automobile is a nuisance and a climate killer that should ideally be abolished and banned, world-wide, now! The mere mention of cars triggers them.
The list includes cats. The many cat pictures in the Fediverse go on some people's nerves to such degrees that they demand all posts with cat pictures be hidden behind a content warning.
The list includes police. Both radical anarchists and victims of police violence are triggered by the mere mention of police.
The list includes long posts. I've already explained why. There is no consensus as to what defines a long post, but everything that exceeds 500 characters is a safe bet.
The list includes threads, not as in Meta Threads a.k.a. "Twitter by Facebook", but as in one post spread across the post itself and a chain of comments. Some people even on Mastodon feel disturbed enough by this to demand a content warning.
If you don't need to be warned about all of this, and you say that CWs for these topics (or at least some of them) are ridiculous, and they must not be CW'd because you personally don't need these CWs, you spit into the faces of these people.

i wouldn't really say that any of these CW's are "bad" or ridiculous, thats just, but 'you get them even if you don't want them' still applies if you put a hashtag, it shows up in the post
but also on here, they serve also as a subject indicator to an extent too; what the post is like about generally; i have used the cw field to say 'pokemon' or 'minecraft', despite these not being triggering topics
(also cw'ing cops is not an issue, their an organization with the sole purpose of harming people..) like ngl this like when someone get mad about 'gay stuff shoved down their throat' per-se, its like .. a non-issue.
but no reason why you couldn't also explicitly opt-out of certain cw's instead of opting in; (which also seems safer; a list of things that don't hurt you sitting on a server somewhere seems better than one of things that do ...)
but also if you have to manually include a #ContentWarning tag or whatever, your still relying on users actually adding that in; and they could not..?

Like, I decide to CW text formatting from now on. Bam, 14,000,000+ Fediverse users on 30,000+ servers of 150+ server applications have it CW'd unless they opt out.
I decide to CW bullet-point lists. Bam, 14,000,000+ Fediverse users on 30,000+ servers of 150+ server applications have it CW'd unless they opt out.
I decide to CW my posts about virtual worlds because they might go on the nerves of someone who follows me for my "Fediverse isn't only Mastodon" content. Bam, 14,000,000+ Fediverse users on 30,000+ servers of 150+ server applications have it CW'd unless they opt out.
You seriously that can realistically be done?
but also if you have to manually include a #ContentWarning tag or whatever, your still relying on users actually adding that in; and they could not..?
I mean, if everyone went down the most convenient way, no matter how bad things are, you'd all still be on Twitter, wishing for things to be like 2012 again. Right?
Sometimes waiting for people to coddle you and make everything nice and cosy around you does not lead to the desired outcome because it simply doesn't happen. Beg for it all you want. Sometimes you have to take matters into your own hands.
But then again, here on Hubzilla, users are empowered to take matters into their own hands and even moderate their own stream themselves. Mastodon, on the other hand, has 10,000,000++ registered users who expected and often still expect to be mollycoddled all around and have all their wishes fulfilled. Regardless, by the way, of whether someone else may wish for the exact opposite. Then that someone is wrong, plain and simple.

@jupiter_rowland if you want to never be cw'd for everything ever then you can just tuen off cw's, im not interested in someone who complains about cws being on their posts and tbh view it the same as complaining about pronouns, i would feel its coming from a place of hate towards those its for, more than anything else,
secondly "hoping everyone cuddles up and accounts for you" its impossible to not expect this, and is just how you interact with others in general; we also expect you use our name and pronouns to refer to us, and not deliberatley cause us harm; and to follow our boundaries and such, everyone does
this is just part of cooperating and communicating with others, you do so being considerate and understanding of who you are conversing with
secondly filtering on certain phrases doesnt work well, different terms refer to the same thing, sometimes people dont use a given term for something as they feel doing so gives it legitimacy; ex "sideloading" is "installing a program"
@jupiter_rowland in another sense moderating on your own based on terminology is infeisable, bad actors deliberately misuse language for instance transphobes will call women men and men women, and you cant just block either of those terms there regular ass words, theyll also throw around "material reality" to refer to pesudoscience, but so will anarchists when talking about the material effect laws & shit have on people and what your really advocating for .. theyll call themselves feminists and go on about "womens rights" .. but so do feminists..? and so on? tbh? like i just feel like this comes from a place of priviledge
@jupiter_rowland like even just "*she" can be either: a trans person correcting their own pronouns/gender, someone else correcting it on their behalf, both of which are fine, but it can also be a transphobe being shitty and doing cruelty towards a trans man

Why: Some Mastodon users don’t want to read tech talk. Ever.
this is…. not the way “fedi meta” is usually used.
its a long and kind of messy story [it actually originates from the FediblockMeta hashtag]
but any time i see it, its used to refer to… basically drama really, and its usually CW’d because a lot of entities are really fucked up by said drama
[…i dont like when the word “drama” is used to dismiss something and see it as not worth paying attention to. but like, it gets across what this is.]
either way my thought is-
honestly u gotta stop looking for perfection and just Exist
even if it gets normie mastodon twitter-hivemind users mad at you [theyre shit anyway tbh]
using cws because “youre Supposed To use them” is bait and a completely incoherent concept, using cws because “someone might get actually hurt by seeing this, like trauma flashbacks kind of hurt, and i care about them and want to help them” is not.
[the use of “triggered” to mean “mad” does not help here, because it plays into their hands and acts like some pretentious ass being inconvenienced is indistinguishable from e.g. a trauma victim having flashbacks (it’s not)]
@azalea @jupiter_rowland @meluzzy oh god i hate the way the online world has warped the meaning of "triggered" and yeah this is a good point? its not just "because your supposed to" (a non answer that appeals to authority) some users have ptsd/DID/trauma related issues, who can get messed up from it? do it to give people an idea on what your gonna talk about, do it to make personal filtering more effective for those who dont want to see it, and so on.
this is…. not the way “fedi meta” is usually used.

See, the thing is that 99% of all new Mastodon users thought that the Fediverse was only Mastodon after joining. And they loved the Fedierse for just that.
Half of them, when they learned the hard way that there's stuff in the Fediverse that sends content to Mastodon, but that's very much not Mastodon, shat brix in sheer terror. To this day, they wish for the Fediverse to be only Mastodon again (which, by the way, the Fediverse has never been).
Whenever they're reminded of the Fediverse not only being Mastodon, they're triggered. Genuinely triggered. But almost whenever I talk about the Fediverse, I talk about the Fediverse beyond Mastodon.
So the hashtags #FediMeta and #FediverseMeta help these people get rid of that content coming from me. And to be honest, I'm pretty sure that "that content" already starts when I only as little as name-drop Mastodon.
Also, there are people in the Fediverse who do not want to read tech talk. Probably especially not about the Fediverse. I've actually witnessed someone say that they wanted a CW for that kind of content.
Another reason to use these hashtags.
either way my thought is-
honestly u gotta stop looking for perfection and just Exist
Not if, for example, @Li ~ Crystal System expects me to fulfill all the wishes and desires of absolutely everyone all across the Fediverse. And a whole lot of other Mastodon users do so, too. And then there are those who say, "You don't have to perfectly fulfill everyone's wishes!" But I still have to perfectly fulfill their wishes. And if everyone says that...
I mean, I could cut down on filter-triggering hashtags. But someone somewhere out there may actually have a filter for one or multiple of my hashtags, and they may rely on me keeping on using these hashtags. Especially #LongPost, #CWLong and #CWLongPost which may have become a substitute for the official Mastodon app's missing long post folding feature for some users.
even if it gets normie mastodon twitter-hivemind users mad at you [theyre shit anyway tbh]
It's actually those normies that I'm speaking to half of the time. Most people who started following me did so because I was talking about how the Fediverse is not only Mastodon which isn't even the main topic of this channel.
I need a lot of reach to tell the people out there on Mastodon how much the Fediverse is not Mastodon.
I need a lot of reach to try to try to ask the general Fediverse public how to best describe images about an extremely obscure yet potentially curiosity-inducing topic like my main topic. And to vent my frustration about how hard it is to do as I suppose I'm expected to do.
And I need a lot of reach to talk about my main topic: certain 3-D virtual worlds. I want the people out there to see that there's more in terms of virtual worlds than Meta Horizon Worlds (a.k.a. "The Metaverse" a.k.a. "Facebook's Metaverse"; seriously, the place where I am has been casually using the term "metaverse" since at least 13 years before Zuck has first used it, and I've got proof) and crypto scams. I want to show people what virtual worlds can be like, and what they actually are like. (The latter would be easier if it wasn't so tedious to describe my in-world renderings.)
Tell you what: When you have a new Hubzilla channel, and you turn ActivityPub on, and your channel starts being able to federate with Mastodon, the Fediverse becomes a minefield. There are Hubzilla and (streams) channels that have ActivityPub intentionally off for this very reason, regardless of collateral damage.
using cws because “youre Supposed To use them” is bait and a completely incoherent concept, using cws because “someone might get actually hurt by seeing this, like trauma flashbacks kind of hurt, and i care about them and want to help them” is not.
I use them because I want to give people an alternative to muting and blocking me altogether. And that's filtering out the content that makes them uncomfortable.
And yes, this happens. I know for a fact that at least one other Hubzilla user is filtering out all my content with at least one of my typical virtual worlds hashtags in it. We've got individual filters per contact here on Hubzilla, you know.

@jupiter_rowland @azalea i dont "expect" you cater to the desires of everyone ever. i expect you to cater to me and my needs if you also want to interact with me, and i expect a kind of baseline respect towards all people who exist everywhere;
and i think your way of hubzilla cw's is really inaccessible for if you actually have serious trauma related issues,
and if your gonna throw your hands in the air going "your way of doing cw's is annoying" and appealing to "but what about us nooormal people who dont need it and find it annoying" over it basically being a requirement to exist anywhere at all, im gonna take that as generally hostile towards me and people w my needs ..
my complaints arent about it being a summary field or whatever that honesrly just sounds like a silly hack, and should be more codified, i dont care about implementation the issue is: "this makes it inaccessible and means i and those with same issues as me, can not use this platform"
@jupiter_rowland @azalea in general it seems you are complaining that your being asked culture of masto users above desires of hubzilla or other spaces, and pushing your stuff onto us just because your older; and obviously were like not gonna take well; meanwhile it probably feels simular on your side; that said and "were older" is irrelevant; it doesnt actually matter, your not important than me, im not more important than you,
the solution isnt fighting and or hoping one destroys or another changes, and ideally its not non-interaction (i think if we compare to different cultures in real world we can see how obviously these are bad approaches) but rather; being mindful or respectful to our differences and trying to learn from eachother ig
i dunno, other than like complaints about it, thats kinda my other thoughts here, bleh
@jupiter_rowland @azalea also unlike the real world a lack of accessibility is (less) of an issue; assuming people are able to choose where they goto
unlike in soceity where the world chooses for you and is actively hostile and violence towards those that dont comply or fit in and towards anyone trying to change places (and none of them respect your rights as a ... fuck the world), that said id still say its an issue for other reasons notably how it makes those from there perceive those of us with those needs and might reflect stuff in the real world because we arent actually as seperate from that as we'd like, but still.
i dont "expect" you cater to the desires of everyone ever. i expect you to cater to me and my needs if you also want to interact with me, and i expect a kind of baseline respect towards all people who exist everywhere;
"You don't have to cater to everyone's needs 100%. But you have to cater to my needs 100%. And I mean 100%, not just 99.99%."
And then someone else is like, "And to mine."
And then someone else is like, "And to mine."
And then someone else is like, "And to mine."
And then someone else is like, "And to mine."
And then someone else is like, "And to mine."
And then 10,000,000 other Fediverse users are like, "And to mine."
And then comes @Der Skeptiker (on Mastodon; character limit = 500) and demands nobody on the Fediverse post more than 500 characters because it disturbs him.
And then comes @Matthias (on Friendica; character limit = over 16 million) and demands nobody cut longer posts up into small chunks because it disturbs him, lest he block them on the spot.
And then comes @crossgolf_rebel - kostenlose Kwalitätsposts (on Calckey) who does not want anyone to ever confuse the Fediverse with only Mastodon because it disturbs him.
And then come thousands upon thousands of Mastodon users who don't ever want to be told just that.
And all of a sudden, we've got contradictions. What one users demands you to do, another user explicitly demands you not to do.
And then come people who don't want anything CW'd as long as it isn't porn or gore because that's annoying, and it has to stop.
And then come Friendica and Hubzilla and (streams) and Forte users who don't want Mastodon users to misuse the abstract/summary field for CWs.
And then come those who say that Mastodon's way of CW'ing is stupid anyway because the CW will trigger many people just the same as the content behind the CW, in addition to these CWs forced upon everyone all the same being a nuisance.
And then you come again with your demands that clearly contradict the last three.
and i think your way of hubzilla cw's is really inaccessible for if you actually have serious trauma related issues,
If you don't like it: @Michael 🇺🇦 and @Tobias are the maintainers of Friendica. @Mario Vavti and @Harald Eilertsen are the maintainers of Hubzilla. @Mike Macgirvin ?️ is the creator of Friendica and Hubzilla and still the maintainer of (streams) and Forte. They all do CWs the same.
If you don't like it, go ask them to make Friendica, Hubzilla, (streams) and Forte more like Mastodon by turning Friendica's abstract field and Hubzilla's, (streams)' and Forte's summary field into a CW field and removing the NSFW filter feature altogether.
At best, they'll ignore you. Otherwise, they'll mansplain you.
Oh, and no, they will not pamper and mollycoddle you by making their software more like Mastodon without you asking, just by reading your mind.
my complaints arent about it being a summary field or whatever that honesrly just sounds like a silly hack
You're so fucking wrong! What Mastodon does is the silly hack.
Now let me give you a history lesson:
2008
@Evan Prodromou launched Identi.ca.
It had the summary field as a summary field.
And he published the software as StatusNet which became the first software in what'd later be known as the Fediverse.
StatusNet no longer exists; it became GNU social.
2010
@Mike Macgirvin ?️ launched Mistpark, later Friendica.
It immediately connected to StatusNet and a whole lot of other things.
It has the summary field as a summary field (only that Friendica calls it "abstract").
Friendica still exists.
2012
@Mike Macgirvin ?️ launched Red, later the Red Matrix, as a fork of a fork of Friendica.
It immediately connects to StatusNet and Friendica and most of what Friendica connects to.
It has the summary field as a summary field.
The Red Matrix became Hubzilla in 2015.
Hubzilla still exists.
2016
Gargron (whom I'm so not going to tag) launched Mastodon.
2017
A Mastodon user submits a code change that takes StatusNet's summary field and uses it as a content warning field.
So, we were here first. And we had the summary field first, and we had it as a summary field.
It's Mastodon that's a "silly hack".
Mastodon has introduced Friendica's NSFW feature as part of its filters in October, 2022, when Mastodon 4.0 was rolled out. It could have done that right away in January, 2016, when Friendica has already had that feature for five and a half years.
Also, Friendica already had its own culture, perfectly geared towards Friendica's features, as early as 2010 when Gargron was still in school. So no-one, not even you, can come and force Friendica to throw away its 15-year-old culture that's perfectly geared towards its own features and replace it with Mastodon's culture as defined in 2022 that doesn't even work with Friendica's features.
Just because there's Mastodon now, the rest of the Fediverse does not have to turn into Mastodon, too.
Just because Mastodon makes up between 60 and 70% of the Fediverse, the rest does not have to turn into Mastodon, too.
Especially not what was there before Mastodon.
I always say that many Mastodon users act like the European settles in the New World who forced the natives to fully abandon their own "primitive" cultures and adopt the settlers' European culture and convert to Catholic Christianity or else.
Only that, unlike most Mastodon users, the European settlers did not think that they were here first, and that the natives arrived after them.

if your answer is to say "wah im expected to treat people properly and reapect their needs whenever i interact with them" then im not really interested in taking this any further, just admit you dont give a shit about other people at all.
the fact your maintainers when a accessibility issue is pointed out will just go "but but someone might get annoyed!! so fuck you just be traumatzied" and insist "you just dont want to setup filtering" when "setting up filtering" in this sense is impossible, write down everything that could ever be an issue for me at once, which i cant becausee dissociation, amnesia, differing between alters, or; use it, get triggered (i.e PTSD) over and over, try figure out why, and add it to the list each time, all so you can go off some arbitary purity shit of it only being around gore or sex for no reason,
@mario @tobias @harald @jupiter_rowland @feb @mikedev @azalea @skeptiker @Li I haven't read the whole thread; I just skimmed through it. However, since I have been mentioned, I will reply.
If anyone has a problem with what Friendica does or how it behaves, I suggest creating an issue in our repository so that we can eventually find a solution.
Regarding 'eventually', however: Friendica is developed by a small team who are constantly eager to improve it, but resources are limited, so improvements can take time.
Regarding the summary field that Mastodon uses for "content warnings": It is possible to create posts in Friendica that contain this field. When a conversation contains information in this field, the reply will automatically contain the content of this field by default.
@heluecht @mario @tobias @harald @jupiter_rowland @feb @mikedev @azalea @skeptiker i think the actual root issue is that there isnt a standard way to do cw's; it being hacked into a summary field, but that causes usability issues on places expecting a summary there, likewise summaries in there cause issues for places that expect it to be a cw, and likewise, spamming a bunch of tags to catch filters is not a good solution either, for many reasons i mentioned (in this thread,
primarily when considering them in context of people w PTSD or DID etc, who need them most; (having a comprehsive list of triggers is impracticle, and also raises safety & privacy concerns, both from instance admins and for ourselves; all of which i feel have been dismissed or minimized here..)
none of this exactly screams good accepting place tbh, so sorry if im a bit skeptical of this. or if this isnt the norm idk
At best, they’ll ignore you. Otherwise, they’ll mansplain you.
hey wait a minute youre mansplaining them aren’t you
you keep diverting from what theyre actually saying to act like youre hot shit and know everything
I always say that many Mastodon users act like the European settles in the New World
ok yea this is actually so true though, its basically exactly how i see them [and hey, i mean, same culture that did the colonization!]
@azalea @jupiter_rowland except in this case their responsing to a post thats litterally """"mastodon"""" (i think its sharkey lmao), insisting we adopt all their shit and fuck over anyone with actual trauma related issues, and be inaccessible as hell for no reason because "we were here first" some purity shit about implementation details, and "how dare you cw anything except gore and sex, what about my precious arbitary criteria!!" and other thinly veiled ableism, like fuck off
and my og post was that it was a shitty hack and they probably should have a dedicated field for it, given how theyve talked to me, and this post mostly completely validating my previous observation that those who bitch about this are like those who bitch about pronouns and the horror! of having to have basic reapect to anyone ever, and all those thoughts being wholeheardedly validated here, im guessing theres a reason why they had to do a shitty hack tbh
turning "this is a important accessibility feature actually. and the way your describing makes them functionally useless as content warnings" and strawpersoning it into "this exact backend implementation of it is exactly how it should work" and appealing to "but definitely not bigoted people and their arbitary criteria on whats upsetting!! and 'NT's minor annoyance is more inportant than you not being triggered'" and so on, along with "treating people properly too hard just fuck you be mistreated and you will like it" but also an expectation that i also put up with that and continue to interact and engage,
either treat me how i want to be treated or dont interact with me,
sorry, CWs at the bottom of a post where i have to already be traumatized from reading to see them are functionally useless, CWs where i have to write every single thing thst could ever be an issue first for them to do anything are functionally useless, CWs on only gore and sex are functionally useless,
.
either treat me how i want to be treated
Besides, if I did so, I'd betray my thousands of brethren on Friendica and Hubzilla and (streams) and Forte, and almost everyone else in places that aren't Mastodon, and probably also annoy millions of Mastodon users, just to baby and pamper and mollycoddle one Mastodon user.
Also, I can't know how exactly you want to be treated because you don't give me a full, detailed, all-encompassing list of all your needs. And no, I can't read your mind.
or dont interact with me,
#Long #LongPost #CWLong #CWLongPost #FediMeta #FediverseMeta #CWFediMeta #CWFediverseMeta
@jupiter_rowland really? because the rest of fedi manages just fine to be accessible towards traumatized individuals, and doesnt appeal to " poor neurotypicals finding accessibility annoying because it reminds them people who arent like them exist and might have different needs"
i have litterally not demanded much from you other than to not deliberately cause me to come to harm, which is generally speaking, extremely basic and universal, and otherwise pointed out that "catering to others needs" is something everyone does ever in order to interact with anyone, i havent asked you to do anything directly,
i have expressed that hubzilla is inaccessible to me, as it lacks functional cw's and that alot of reasons you've given for why, i feel are very ableist in nature; and your inferacrion with me in general hasnt helped things;if anything, im providing context on why i could never use it,
@jupiter_rowland to avoid going in circles here:
consider the following
seeing a particular topic somewhere results in:
-> you ceasing to exist for an intererminate amount of time; and someone else takes your place
-> you have little memory of what happened, including what exactly caused it
-> not even nessecarily being aware this has happened at all,
-> also while someone else is taking your place; they react to these things differently and might not have this issue
again, cannot remember what happened to cause it, and definitely cant iterate over what does it to you as if its a list or anythint, but you know how you feel around certain topics individually though,
like seriously, how would you navigate that, assuming you dont want to be forcefully removed from the world around you at every turn?
esp if all you have to work with is opt in cw where you explicitly say every possible thing you want warned on
One: Friendica, Hubzilla, (streams) and Forte
(The hilarity is that the only two server applications that are capable of blocking a whole Fediverse project by user agent are (streams) and Forte.)
Three: Everything that isn't close enough to Mastodon is abandoned altogether. All servers are shut down, and the code repositories, often the work of 15 years, are deleted, including all forks and forks of forks, so that nobody can ever set up new ones.
Four: Only Forte is shut down and deleted. Friendica makes DFRN its only base protocol again. And Friendica, Hubzilla and (streams) remove all traces of ActivityPub support so they can no longer connect to Mastodon.

@jupiter_rowland i am litterally only talking about CWs here, litterally every single other shit you do is fine, i dont care if you have a subject field i dont care if you have long posts, these arent needs just, minor annoyances, which you keep confusing (you also confuse triggers with minor discomfort, again; i have PTSD and DID, this is serious shit, that poses an actual risk to my safety.. its not just a "this is how id prefer to use the site", missing CW's can, and have, caused harm to me in the past) having content warnings that actually function as content warnings; however is essential for accessibility, i do not care how these are implemented, add a new field for it or whatever the fuck to make it work, but describing that as "our entire culture" is; frankly dishonest. but as far as im concerned me personally* coexisting without that, is like asking me to go back to reddit, twitter, or any other shit,
anyway, i dont know how to put this any more bluntly than just; requiring people w trauma to list out every single possible thing that triggers them is both impossible, time-consuming; and downright irresponsible or unsafe;
i do not know all my triggers, but i can decide when to avoid something if its on a post, (which btw, i can't do if all the cws are at the very bottom where i have to have read the whole thing to see any of it)
in general, this way of handling it i feel comes from a large amount of priviledge;
where you both know what your triggers are; (No; we have amnesia.)
where thinking about and trying to come up with a list of what your triggers are is safe to do (It generally speaking, isn't)
That they are always constant across time (No; we are a system.)
That it is safe or appropriate for you to be able to access a big list of this at any given time. (No; we are a system.)
like in general; all you have done is tell me how inaccessible Hubzilla is.

@Li ~ Crystal System Okay, I've tried to put this comment behind a content warning because this comment will contain a whole lot of potentially triggering things.
An explanation first: Hubzilla is not like Mastodon in that threads consists of posts and more posts. It is more like a blog or like Facebook or Tumblr in that a conversation consists of exactly one post and otherwise comments. Unlike on Mastodon, comments work differently on Hubzilla, they have their own entry mask instead of using that for posts on Hubzilla, and they have different features from posts on Hubzilla.
On Hubzilla, a reply is not another post. It's a comment, you know, like a blog comment.
Have you ever seen a blog with a summary field for comments? No? I haven't either. Nobody has. It doesn't even make sense traditionally. And so, Hubzilla does not have a summary field for comments.
And so, in order to add a summary to a comment, the best I can do is use a pair of BBcode tags which should be known, but are not officially documented on Hubzilla: [summary][/summary]
.
Although I have a preview button here on Hubzilla, unlike Mastodon again, I can only preview what my comment will look like on Hubzilla. I cannot preview what it will look like on Mastodon. Hence, I do not know if these summary tags will actually do what they're supposed to do and hide this comment behind a summary and CW.
That aside, I will now list 142 things that may or may not trigger people or make them uncomfortable enough that they see a CW justified. I've had most of them on a list already, and I've just added those few that I always CW myself to be on the safe side.
If you want me to perfectly pamper and mollycoddle you and cater to all your needs 100%, I need to know what your triggers are so I can CW them and only them and nothing else so as to not annoy you with unnecessary CWs.
Scroll down for the list. Scroll at your own risk. (I hope that the blank lines will make it over to you.)

Here comes the obligatory hashtag block.
Again, and for those who are late to the party:
#___Meta
means that the topic itself does not appear in this comment, it's only mentioned/talked about. I still add the non-meta hashtags because I don't know what everyone out there filters or doesn't filter. Besides, some places outside of Mastodon let you filter #___ AND NOT #___Meta
.
#CW___
means that this hashtag stands in for a content warning, and it helps you filter content that contains and/or mentions/talks about this topic out.
#CW___Meta
only exists for stuff that I talk about frequently. It helps you filter content that only mentiones/talks about the topic.
I'm probably creating several hundred new hashtags now. But I have to.

@jupiter_rowland @azalea look ok;
all i am actually saying here is: content warnings should be standardized, it is, bad for both of us, that there are two competing ways of doing them, i dont get the click through prompt on your stuff and have to find wherevere the phrase "CWWhatever" is in your post, before reading anything, and for you our CWs show up as summaries and probably dont hide the post, so they dont work as cw's either,
i agree if you take an all or nothing stance on this then theres no workable solutions, but is it really just is it too much to ask to add a standardized way to do this? cause my cws are not treated as a cw on hubzilla, and your cws arent treated as cws on masto-adj software,
is that not essentially, the root of both of the problem? because that doesnt seem unworkable to me
@jupiter_rowland @azalea this is another thing; *because of how cw work on here* you have to write the same thing like 5 tomes, like theres 5 different ways of writing "covid 19" in here, for example, where just a single "cw: covid" should do,
but anyone could have their filters in all sorts of ways so you have to put it many times to try fit as many as possible .. like you yourself are working around issues caused by doing it this way in this example

@jupiter_rowland i cannot understand context; but i will add: everything that doesnt requires an online connection to function will outlive anything that does, and android devices will suck in a post-google world but also i would also say apple maps exists, even if its not that much better
I don't know how old you are and when you came online first. But those of you who have been online for two decades or more remember (or should remember) Google doing that stuff again and again.
Here are a few examples:
In 2011, Google started Google+, a social network in direct competition against Facebook. For many, Google+ was the better Facebook.
Okay, it was an all-out rip-off of diaspora*, a free, open-source, decentralised social network that got $200,000+ in crowdfunding in summer 2011 because people expected a non-commercial "Facebook killer". But since the vast majority of people had never heard of diaspora* ever coming to life, nobody knew that Google's oh-so-revolutionary "invention" of "Circles" (like Mastodon lists) was actually diaspora*'s aspects, and even they weren't diaspora*'s invention. Also, Google's entire UI corporate identity with the black menu bar at the top was ripped off diaspora*'s UI.
Anyway, people loved Google+ to pieces. For some reason, they put more trust into the blatant data thief Google than into the blatant data thief Facebook.
In 2019, Google announced to shut Google+ down.
Or how about Picasa? An offline image viewer connected to an online image-sharing platform, launched in 2002.
In 2004, Picasa was bought out by Google. Still, it got more and more popular.
In 2016, Google announced to discontinue both the offline image viewer and the online image-sharing platform.
Want more? Okay. Google Reader.
Launched by Google in 2005. It got so successful that it basically killed of almost the entire RSS aggregator market because everyone and their dog only used Google Reader for that. For the vast majority of Internet users, Google Reader was literally the only possible way to subscribe to an RSS or Atom feed.
Regardless, Google announced to discontinue Google Reader in 2013.
Or how about Google Talk? The poster child of Embrace, Extend, Extinguish?
So Google started their own XMPP/Jabber server in 2005. It was actually federated, i.e. other XMPP servers could connect to it.
Of course, being a Google product, it had billions of advertisement budget behind itself. So it quickly became huge. In fact, Google Talk became almost synonymous for XMPP except for a few free software nerds.
Soon, Google Talk had more users than all other XMPP servers, including jabber.org, combined. By magnitudes. Also because the vast majority of Google Talk users knew nothing about XMPP and only enjoyed "MSN by Google" or "ICQ by Google".
Then (Extend) Google added new features that were incompatible with the rest of the XMPP network. If you wanted to use them, you had to be on Google Talk.
Then (Extinguish) Google closed the federation and locked the entire rest of the XMPP network out. Some say that Google killed off XMPP itself that way.
And then, in 2013, Google shut Google Talk down entirely.
When their next instant messaging system, Allo, was launched in 2016, it didn't nearly become as popular, partly because the instant messaging market was almost completely scooped up by WhatsApp, and what was left was firmly in the hands of Telegram, partly because people probably expected Google to pull the plug on it anyway. Which Google did in 2019.
Always the same life cycle:
@jupiter_rowland yes i know that google has a history of doing this, but i wasnt really in any threads related to this it just showed up randomly and thought it was in reply to something i said or something
oh damn, there are too many standards for open data that are not ODbL what do we do? Let's write a new licence that will be only in french and will preven foreign actors (except the big ones like google and apple) from accessing data due to a loophole and also OSM won't be able to use it because it's incompatible with ODbL.I am trying very hard not to xkcd 927 right now. Even if the actual situation is even worseThis should make it usable by OSM and prevent big tech from competing with us using our own data right?

@Kingu English is not my first language, so I may not understand the question correctly… but why use the grammatical ‘will’ and not the more appropriate ‘has’ (already)? 🥳
Well. Very near but not there yet!
I signed up on sakurajima.social to check out what a misskey server is like and I’m really enjoying it so far.
Took some time to figure out that it’s not Mastodon and that while I can login with mastodon apps it functions wonky.
After using my JP App Store account, I was able to get a couple different misskey apps and I’ve enjoyed it since.
I know the web app works the best but I prefer apps on mobile.
Anyways, gimme a follow there if you want to experience the fireweed on misskey story.
Same handle.
I will say that misskey looks like a better place to shitpost but I am too invested in Urusai to focus my attention on sakurajima too much
@fireweed@urusai.social I really like the Misskey web UI (well, Sharkey which is what mk.luna.se.net and sakurajima.social use) and I like all the extra features as well, it's nice.
@heredos I’ve enjoyed it so far!
Still exploring though. I hope I can make some more friends

im trying to delete my old reddit account(s) but reddit is following the shitty trend of 'delete' meaning 'rename my account to [deleted]' and keep all my data on your servers;
so- i found a script that can mass-delete everything you ever posted on the site,
it requires creating a api token
so far, this has worked on two accounts, and not* on my other two, giving an inexplicable "500" error
found a few other people compllaining about that, with no replies or any info given
also* apparently its recommended to just edit all your posts, to random text, leaving spam littered across the site, because as reddit has been known to stealth-revert mass deletions in the past ...
(these accounts also act weird in general, like always acting as if your logged out on the home page, but not elsewhere..)
some of these accounts are very old, and just a brief look i see some things on here that i am against and wouldnt post today, and cannot remove them
I'm working on transitioning :3Hey girl

I guess I've been lax about #JMusicFriday too. I want to share more, but it gets depressing how few people seem to take an interest (on any platform, not just Fedi.) Good music becomes less good to many people if it's not in English apparently.
I shared this one a day ago, but I feel like sharing it again: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhd67CnArlI
I really love when Isekaijoucho uses her "adult" voice as I call it (probably her real voice) instead of the more childish voice the character does sometimes. It is a really good voice and it should be free!
J-Pop is more complicated to understand for people, this is why K-Pop and American pop dominate.
But please don't be depressed and keep posting!!!
We are only a selected few, but we are there and always wants more!!!
@Kingu I mean, the actual pop can be pretty easy to understand, but I admit the music I get into gets a lot deeper — and often even has to be accompanied with CWs for involving darker subjects...
There's this one Vocaloid song Hanatan covered that I have to put like 50 CWs on, lol. (But omg it's so good.)
Like seriously: CW for gore, body horror type stuff, allusions to suicide, religious imagery, etc etc. Legitimately no one click on this unless you're really really sure...

But OMG that guitar and Hanatan's voice...
@heredos Thanks for asking. I appreciate it. (No, seriously, I really do. I wish more people talked about this stuff.)
I didn't know they started airing it yet, but presuming it's based more or less verbatim on the VN, so I guess I know the story. I may still watch it since it's pretty good, but it would have to be later after its completion I guess. (I also kind of struggle to get into anime in general these days.) I also, embarrassingly enough, haven't quite finished the VN. (I'm at a part where I have to go back and figure out how to do something differently after completing one sort of not ideal ending, but I think I'm on the final "true" route so to speak.)
It's harder for me to get into anything these days if I'm being honest, so it's delegated to "when I can" I guess.
What i have played however is the rythm game, and i must admit it was quite a disapointment. The game was a laggy mess that tried to keep the same gameplay and maps between mobile, pc and switch (some maps are unplayable on mobile, and some other are clearly not made for pc) whose story was not very well written...
but yea, i don't really know what to think about the anime. It goes really fast at times, the characters act in weird ways, i ended up dropping but i'm still curious about the lore, maybe i should play the vn instead
And also i wonder how do they plan to include albemuth/asu in that lore, because they seem to have kind of tried that in the rythm game to some degree.
@heredos I think that rhythm game/VN thing was more an experiment than anything else. The actual VN is actually IMO really good story-wise. The rhythm parts of it are mostly well done. I mostly enjoyed them (and they had good songs. With KAF/RIM, Isekaijoucho, HARUSARUHI, and etc. No Vocaloids.)
It has been a little while, for various reasons, so I'm forgetting who is who. Asu and Aru may have been the side characters in Isekaijoucho's story in the VN. My memory is a bit fuzzy though. When I get back to it I'm honestly probably going to have to reread the whole thing. (It has really been too long. My memory is really bad, lol.)
@heredos Mostly small rhythm parts. Most are essentially "boss battles" of sorts. One of the witches sings while you defend her until she completes the spell basically. Something like that.
It's not like the rhythm game though. Much more minimal.
@heredos Yeah, this one doesn't try to be too much. It mostly tries to be a VN with only a bit of QTE/rhythm stuff thrown in for fun (and an excuse for the songs to be part of the game, rofl.)
Oh and they're pretty good songs. Especially those Kaf and Isekaijoucho sing.
This month marks three years since the source code for Principia was released, and the game's continued development as a FOSS project by the community.
Under these three years the game has been given a new life, and has become accessible to a new audience rather than being relegated to a footnote in Android gaming.
Here's to three more years.
remind me to get a big drive and download everything on my internet archive, (and that i care about..) before fascism burns the library of alexandria.
IA being US based is just ... scary
@Li centralized with terrible download speeds, and US-based, owie
@soop it is a fairly large amount of data, it is non-trivial to do it decentralized, but i agree it is an issue for longevity and its ability to resist attack from authoritarians (the extremely large amount of data it is, is also why the download speeds are slow)
there is some benefit that most of whats on there is also a torrent, but no one seeds them soo (are they even published to the DHT?)
@heredos IA is also software, pretty much the entire historical record for the early internet, and also old firmwares and drivers and like .. soo much more
hey remember if you find yourself being forced to implement age verification fascism shit; remember to implement it entirely client side, and in a way thats super super easy to bypass, maybe just a popup, thats from a div, that happens tob e called 'ad_frame" or 'ad' or something (for 'age determination') so adblock nukes it
remember to just forget to verify whatever you upload to it and always return success then blame it on an AI
(better yet actually overtrain some machine learning shit to always say its success)
alternatively, block whatever country outright, but hten also direct all user accessing from that country, to the TOR Browser. (could also have an onion service for it <3)
@heredos this ai model has a accuracy of 99% for determining who is an adult on the site (because most users are adults..) now go sell it to all the tech bros
what kind of twisted dystopian reality do we live in that two linux devices can't be connected to one another with a usb cable to transfer information over
the internet was a mistake.
come on people, the nintendo(TM) game~~boy~~thing could do this.
Wanna make my own instance
@fireweed@urusai.social It's cool as long as you can deal with the challenges that come with it.
@licht I’m likely not capable of dealing with them so it may just be a dream
@fireweed@urusai.social @heredos@heredos.net If you already know some Linux it's not that bad, if you don't there's a lot to learn. When all that is said and done and the instance is up and running, you'll have to deal with an empty feed for a while, because of the way the fediverse works. You don't get every post from everyone in the network, only the posts (including boosts etc.) from people who your instance's users follow. For the same reason, your posts also won't show up on other people's instances unless some user there follows you. Being a smaller instance, there will be less users following and being followed so there will be less content on the feeds.
i personally started fedi with my single user instance, just following friends who i knew had a fedi account, and sometimes following the people they reposted, liked, or replied to.
basically starting with an echo chamber and slowly networking a way out.
i think it worked quite well, i don't have a very active timeline, but i know most of the thing in there will be things i loox for, and i feel less like i'm gold digging interesting posts like i could be doing on a big network without algorithm.
but if you like having lots of content, you can subscribe to relays. i think sakurajima has one for example
also maybe you can ask your instance's admins how they did the bubble server thing. i know there are ways to follow a full instance through instance actors but it is often a bit clunky
@heredos is owning your own instance expensive
and the domain name, but that's quite cheap as well.
the most expensive thing is probably the time it takes to troubleshoot X)
@heredos I guess u could get a raspberry pi since it’ll be cheaper on electricity
